Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any qualifications?

You do not need any specific qualifications. Working as a Carer will depend on your attitude and ability to be compassionate, patient and understanding. Certain qualities make better Carers, such as flexibility, cheerfulness, a good sense of humour and excellent housekeeping skills.

Experience is a major advantage, but not essential and can be gained on the job when you join the team.

What documentation do I need to show when I apply?

The following documents are required before we can process your application:

  • Your CV
  • Two recent photographs
  • Two references from sources not related to you, one of which has to be from your most recent employer (if getting references from outside the UK, please provide email addresses or fax numbers where possible)
  • Two proofs of current address(such as a utility bill, bank statement or phone bill)

Please include as many of the following documents as possible with your completed application:

  • Passport (or EU identity card)
  • Proof of your eligibility to work in the UK (if applicable)
  • National Insurance card (or number)
  • Driver’s licence
  • Birth certificate
  • Copies of any relevant training certificates
  • Proof of registration of Worker Registration Scheme

How do I apply for a work permit?

British and EU passport* holders are able to work in the UK without restrictions.

If you are applying from outside these countries you will require a work permit. If you are a Commonwealth citizen and have a grandparent born in the UK you are entitled to an ancestral visa. We recommend that you approach your local British consulate, who will be able to advise on the type of visa that you require. You will then need to send all relevant forms and documents to the British consulate office in your home country. The application process may take a long time, so please bear this in mind.

We also accept applications from those who are married to a member of an EEA national (spousal visa), have Indefinite Leave to Remain, Right of Abode, have been granted asylum, or have qualified for a visa on the UK points-based system.

Hartwig Care will need to see all relevant work permits and home office letters before you are able to register with us. For more information on working in the UK, please consult the following website:

*Bulgarian and Romanian citizens need to have a work permit

How will Hartwig Care process my application?

After we receive your application and relevant documentation we will contact you to discuss your application, asking for further information or additional documentation as required and arrange for an interview with the Recruitment Officer.

After we receive two satisfactory references from you and approve your application, we will invite you to attend our four-day induction and training course. After induction, training and assessment, subject to your performance, we will finalise your application and welcome you to the Hartwig Care team.

Do I need a mobile phone?

You will often be asked to provide Care at different locations, so we highly recommend that you carry a mobile phone.

Can you guarantee me work?

As a Care agency we cannot guarantee work. We introduce Carers to Clients needing Care and your employment will depend on Clients' requirements.

Due to the nature of Care, with Clients occasionally going to hospital with no prior notice, the situation may change from day to day. We will work very hard, however, to match your Caring skills to Clients' needs and introduce you to as many Clients as you require.

We advise that you should have enough funding to live on for at least 2 months during and after the interview and training process.

We work to match Clients and Carers to limit any stress and upset to all parties. For this reason it may not be possible to introduce work to you immediately after you have joined the roster of Carers.
